Have you ever found yourself wondering how Canadians perceive tax fairness? If so, you're not alone.

A recent study conducted by the Fraser Institute has provided some intriguing insights into this very issue. In this blog post, we'll drive into these findings and explore what tax fairness means to Canadians. So, let's dive in!

The Complex Landscape of Tax Fairness

The Fraser Institute's study revealed that nearly 60% of Canadians believe that the combined federal-provincial income tax rate should not exceed half of someone's income. Despite this sentiment, the top combined income tax rate exceeds 50% in all provinces except Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Interestingly, 70% of Canadians agree that some people do not pay their fair share of taxes. This sentiment is strongest among the elderly and in the prairie provinces, British Columbia, and Quebec. However, only 58% of Canadians earning less than $20,000 a year shared this view.

This indicates a complex view of tax fairness among Canadians. While there's a general agreement that some people aren't paying their fair share, there's less consensus on whether it's the high-income earners who should be shouldering more of the burden.

Variations Based on Region, Age, and Income

The study also unveiled some interesting variations in responses based on region, age, and household income. For instance, Albertans were the most likely to say the tax rate should not exceed 50%. On the flip side, Quebecers and Atlantic Canadians expressed the lowest support for a tax rate of 50% or lower, but that was still the preferred rate for about three-quarters of respondents in these regions.

Age and income also played a role in shaping opinions. Older respondents (ages 65 and older) were more likely to believe some Canadians don't pay their fair share of taxes. Interestingly, the 18-24 age group was the only one where less than half (49%) of respondents agreed with this perception.

Key Takeaways from the Study

The Fraser Institute's study offers an interesting snapshot of Canadian opinions on income tax rates and general overall tax fairness. It's clear that many Canadians have complex views on these issues, influenced by factors such as their age, income, and region.
