Choose the Right Tax Preparer & Avoid Costly Mistakes
As a home-based entrepreneur, you’ve probably wondered—Am I missing out on potential tax savings? I hear from home-based entrepreneurs all the time who say their tax preparer doesn’t help much beyond just filing taxes. Sound familiar? Do you find yourself in this situation?
Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Tax Preparer?
Deciding to outsource your tax preparation is a significant decision. While it can bring peace of mind, remember that the ultimate responsibility for your taxes lies with you. It’s important to understand your tax obligations and potential write-offs, ensuring you stay informed and proactive throughout the year.
When it comes to tax professionals, not all are created equal—especially when it comes to home-based business expertise.
Here’s the reality: You pay someone a few hundred to a thousand dollars to file your taxes during tax season. You hand them a pile of receipts and documents, hoping they’ll "work their magic."
But there’s only so much you can expect from this type of transactional service. Their time is valuable, especially during tax season—the busiest time of the year for them. By the time tax season rolls around, you’re simply reporting on your taxes—the opportunity to reduce your income tax has already been lost.
Not All Tax Preparers Are Experts
If you hire a tax preparer, you might assume they know everything about maximizing deductions and keeping you audit-proof. However, the truth is that many tax preparers lack the specialized knowledge needed to handle the unique needs of home-based entrepreneurs.
“Most tax preparers aren’t the experts everyone thinks they are,” warns Forbes, and the U.S. government backs this up, estimating that business owners overpay by $50 billion annually.
A CPA Tax Lawyer writing for Kiplinger’s blames CPA ignorance and laziness for wasting countless dollars in avoidable taxes. If you ask the question, “What can I do to reduce my tax bill?” and the accountant’s response is, “We’re already doing everything we can,” it’s probably time to find someone else.
Why You Might Be Overpaying Income Tax
The unfortunate reality is that if your tax preparer isn’t actively working with you throughout the year on tax strategies to seek out deductions, you’re likely leaving tax money on the table.
This is why it’s important to work with someone who truly understands the nuances of home-based business taxes to ensure you’re taking advantage of all the deductions available to you.
David Ramsey points out that “Every year, more than 2 million taxpayers overpay their income taxes—and we’re not talking about pocket change.”
Forbes also reports that 93% of business owners overpay their taxes—even those with expensive CPAs. The reason? Too many tax advisors either don’t know or don’t care about the countless opportunities hidden in the 70,000+ pages of tax code.
In Chapter 10 of my book, Write Off Almost Anything, titled Your Tax Preparer is Giving You Bad Advice, I share insights from years of experience and offer guidance on selecting a tax preparer who truly understands the unique needs of a home-based business.
Real-Life Stories: Home-Based Entrepreneur Pays Too Much Income Tax
I’ve had first-hand experiences with countless home business owners facing tax nightmares due to poor advice or incorrect filing. From recording items incorrectly to claiming questionable deductions, these mistakes can lead to hefty fines and audits.
I recently worked with a full-time home-based entrepreneur who was paying about $20,000 per year in income taxes. They had an accountant who charged $700 to file their taxes—without offering any bookkeeping or tax strategy services. Each year, they simply handed the accountant a pile of receipts and trusted them to "do their stuff."
I asked a series of questions about their business, home office claims, and other tax write-offs. In a 20-minute conversation, I figured out how to save this person about $5,000 per year in income taxes.
What value does $700 offer a home business if it’s just to file your taxes? Where is the tax planning? No discussion about being proactive or capturing missed tax write-offs throughout the year.
Here are just a few more examples of business owners who paid the price for poor tax preparation:
- A $3,700 Tax Bill Due to Incorrect Filing: I worked with a home-based entrepreneur who owed an additional $3,700 in taxes for 2020. Her tax accountant had recorded some items incorrectly, and she claimed questionable deductions. As a result, the government began reviewing her write-offs for 2020 and potentially other years.
- A $16,000 Error from a CPA: Another person I know owed $16,000 to the CRA due to their CPA’s error. This client faced increased scrutiny on future returns and missed a $10,000 deduction simply by relying on their accountant’s advice.
- Misusing Tax Write-Offs: One business owner claimed a high-end fridge as a 100% tax write-off because she occasionally entertained a client at home. Her accountant, who had been handling her taxes for years, failed to provide tax advice and simply filed as instructed. Now she’s realizing that relying on an accountant who just files what you give them isn’t always in your best interest.
- A $60,000 Tax Disaster: Perhaps the most shocking case involved a home business owner who owed $60,000 in taxes due to her CPA misrecording her income. This situation shows how financial disaster can occur when tax matters are not handled properly.
I know you’re probably thinking, "But Doug, I don't like dealing with numbers and receipts." All I can say is that the government appreciates that and is happy to take your hard-earned money—as is your tax preparer with their filing fees.
We need to stop paying for tax preparation services that bring no value. We need to take responsibility for this area of our business.
Imagine the peace of mind you’ll have knowing that you’re not overpaying the government. With proactive planning, you won’t have to scramble during tax season or fear an audit.

Why You Need the Right Tax Preparer
These are just a few examples of the tax horror stories that are all too real for many home-based business owners. The common thread in these stories is a lack of understanding and guidance on what can and cannot be claimed as a tax write-off. This is why it’s so crucial to arm yourself with knowledge and choose a tax preparer who understands the unique needs and potential deductions of a home-based business.
Take Ownership of Your Tax Responsibilities
At the end of the day, you are the one responsible for your tax bill. When the taxman comes calling, it will always fall back on your ownership and accountability.
Even if you outsource your tax preparation, you must still take ownership of your tax situation. Holding a CPA designation doesn’t automatically equip someone with the insider knowledge needed to maximize your write-offs for a home-based business.
Arm Yourself with Knowledge
Before handing over your financial matters to someone else, arm yourself with knowledge. Empower yourself with the right information—especially about the tax write-offs available for your home business.
Stay Involved in the Process
A tax preparer who understands your home-based business can help you optimize deductions and keep your records audit-proof. However, you should remain actively involved in the process. Being proactive isn’t just about scrambling to get your paperwork together at the last minute—it’s about planning throughout the year and organizing your finances with intention.
Questions to Ask When Hiring a Tax Preparer
Here are key questions to help you determine if a tax preparer is the right fit for your home-based business:
- Industry Knowledge: Do they really understand your business? What experience do they have with operating a home-based business in your industry? Industry-specific knowledge is crucial for maximizing deductions.
- Tax Strategy and Planning: How will they work with you to uncover tax strategies that lower your taxable income? You need a preparer who is proactive about reducing your tax burden.
- Audit Support: What happens if you get audited? Will they support you through the process? Knowing their level of support during an audit can provide peace of mind.
- Availability: Are they available year-round for advice and questions, or only during tax season? Year-round availability ensures you can get timely advice whenever needed.
- Fees and Services: What are their fees, and what services are included beyond just tax filing? Make sure the fee structure covers comprehensive services, not just basic filing.
- Preparation for Tax Season: How should you best prepare for tax season? Knowing what’s expected helps you stay organized and avoid last-minute stress. When do you need to provide all the information they need to prepare your taxes? Timely submission of documents is key to a smooth process.
- Experience with Other Clients: What other types of clients do they work with? This helps gauge their experience and suitability for your business.
- Home-Based Business Expertise: What do they know about home-based businesses, your industry, and the tax write-offs you can claim? Expertise in home-based business taxes is essential to maximizing deductions and minimizing liability.
- Team or Individual Support: Who will be handling your account? Is it just them, or do they have a team for support? Knowing who will manage your taxes helps set expectations for communication and service.
- Frequency of Communication: How often will you meet throughout the year? How will they work with you to uncover tax strategies that lower your taxable income? Regular meetings and proactive tax planning can significantly reduce your tax burden.
- Improving Future Returns: Based on last year’s tax submission, is there anything you should do differently next year? Feedback on past returns helps improve future tax strategies and filing processes.
Filing Taxes Isn’t Enough—Maximizing Write-Offs and Avoiding Red Flags
This is why it’s critical to ensure that your tax preparer is qualified to handle the complexities of home-based business taxes. Don’t assume that every tax preparer has the expertise to guide you through the specific deductions and regulations that apply to your business.
In Chapter 10 of my book, I discuss a case where a new home-based entrepreneur underwent a desk audit because the tax return was filed with glaring gaps and red flags. The auditor issued a comprehensive questionnaire covering topics such as home business operations, office space, industry, marketing, customers, vehicle usage, financial records, receipts, and both short-term and long-term business plans.
The tax preparer offered no support and suggested they respond to the detailed audit letter themselves. This resulted in a decision where all tax write-offs were denied, and the individual had to pay just over $5,000 in outstanding income tax plus penalties and interest.
This case highlights the importance of being prepared for an audit—having all necessary documentation ready and understanding the reasoning behind each question.
The Difference Between Tax Filing and Strategic Tax Planning
Filing your taxes at the end of the year is essential, but it’s just a reactive process.
Without year-round planning, most opportunities to save have already been missed by the time tax season arrives.
That’s where I come in—offering year-round strategic tax planning, support, and education to ensure you’re maximizing savings. My approach goes beyond just filing taxes.
I work with home-based entrepreneurs to uncover every possible deduction and create a proactive tax strategy that ensures you're maximizing your tax savings.
The Benefits of Strategic Tax Planning
When you focus on tax planning throughout the year, the benefits can be significant:
- Home-based entrepreneurs I’ve worked with have saved $5,000 to $15,000 on their tax bill annually.
- By planning ahead and saving on income tax, you can reinvest in your business, scale faster, and eliminate the stress of tax season.
- With the right strategies and mindset in place, you won’t just be preparing your taxes—you’ll be preparing your business for long-term financial growth.
Imagine being able to reinvest the $5,000 to $15,000 saved each year into growing your business—whether it's upgrading your tools, marketing, or expanding your team. This isn’t just about tax season; it’s about positioning your business for long-term success.
